Why The higher the Q value, the lower the loss when winding the coil?

We consider the Q value a the basic main parameter while talk about inductance. Q value refer to the  ratio of the inductance exhibited by the inductance to its equivalent circuit loss resistance while the inductance works under a certain frequency of AC voltage.  For an inductor, the higher of Q value is, the smaller its loss will be, then the higher efficiency.

 

Improving coil's Q Value is an important ports during winding, specific method including:

1. According to power,  use a transmission line with a coil

For low work frequency, usually use insulated enameled wires for coil winding.

For working frequency higher than tens of thousands Hz but less than 2MHz, coils winding by multi-strand insulated transmission lines, could increase the surface area of the electrical conductor reasonably, reduce the influence of concentrating effect. Comparing coils wound by a single transmission line with the same cross-sectional area, the Q value 30%~50% higher than .

For work frequency higher than 2MHz, 0.3mm ~1.5mm single thick line is better for the coils winding. With common gold-plated copper core wire inductance coils to improve the conductivity of the surface of the transmission line.

 

2. With high-quality coil frame reduce dielectric loss

Under higher frequencies, such as medium & short wave stock bands, the general frame with high dielectric loss, here we suggest high-frequency porcelain frame, polytetrafluoroethylene frame, polyethylene frame, etc. And wind coil  by the indirect winding method.

 

3. Consider a reasonable  & effective shield diameter

The shielding cover will make Q value reduce, increase the coil loss.  To guarantee the Q vale reduce during a reasonable range, we suggest the cover with a reasonable size. If the ratio of the shield diameter Ds to the coil diameter D is about Ds/D=1.6-2.5, the Q value will not exceed 10%.

 

4. With a core

Winding coils with a core, which could  reduce coils turns, reduce coil;s resistance, increase the Q value, shrink the coil volume.

 

Generally speaking, improving the Q value and reducing the loss are very import during coil winding.
